Pack Some Peace of Mind with a Road Trip Emergency Kit

Toronto, August 12, 2020 – With summer now in high gear, Canadians are looking for a change of scenery more than ever – and many people are turning to their vehicle as a safer way to take a trip. In addition to ensuring that their vehicle is ready for a road trip, it’s a good idea to pack a road trip emergency kit.

“We hope everyone travels safely, but it’s prudent to expect the unexpected and be prepared, which is why we’ve created this list of items every Canadian should consider packing when planning a road trip,” said Bryon Stremler, National Manager, Product Quality and Service Support, Toyota Canada.

Here’s a checklist of items you may want to have in your vehicle before heading out on your next road trip:

  • A mobile phone and charger
  • Emergency flares or reflective warning triangles
  • A first-aid kit
  • A flashlight with extra batteries
  • Battery booster cables
  • A tire pressure gauge
  • Non-perishable food and water
  • Extra windshield washer fluid
  • Emergency blankets, towels and jackets (depending on the weather)

Stremler stresses that everyone in the vehicle should know where these items are located.

Drivers should also double-check that the spare tire, jack and other important tools are present in the vehicle in case there’s a flat tire. And make sure the owner’s manual is in the glove box: It includes instructions for tire changing and other emergency situations.

In an emergency, the technology in your vehicle could also become your best friend. Most new Toyota models, for example, are equipped with Toyota Safety Connect – a subscription-based telematics service that uses Global Positioning System (GPS) data and embedded mobile phone network technology to provide safety and security features for drivers and passengers as long as they’re within network coverage. Round-the-clock emergency response centres support Safety Connect, providing services including Automatic Collision Notification, an SOS Emergency Assistance Button and Enhanced Roadside Assistance.

With an emergency kit on board and the right technology in their vehicle, Canadians can breathe a little easier while enjoying their next adventure on Canada’s many roads.
