Toyota Releases North American Environmental Report

Goal to Create a More Sustainable Future for Society, Business and the Planet Driven by its Environmental Challenge 2050

TORONTO, Ontario (Dec. 17, 2018) – Toyota’s Environmental Challenge 2050 is driven by a vision to create a future where mobility can meet the needs of society without negatively impacting the environment. As outlined in the recently published 2018 North American Environmental Report, Toyota is making progress towards creating a net positive impact on the planet.

“This challenge, which is guided by six principles, is inspiring Toyota team members and connecting with the company’s core commitment to sustainable mobility,” said Stephen Beatty, Vice President, Corporate, Toyota Canada Inc. “Continuous improvement is part of Toyota’s DNA and is reflective of the steady progress we’re making towards achieving our goals and reducing our environmental footprint.”

The report highlights annual progress made in achieving the targets set out in the Environmental Challenge 2050. It outlines actions taken and milestones achieved over the past year at Toyota’s Canadian operations and throughout North America in the areas of carbon, water, materials and biodiversity, as well as outreach activities.

Canadian highlights from the 2018 North American Environmental Report include the following:

  • Toyota Canada has been working closely with partners over the past year to ensure the introduction of an appropriate hydrogen fueling infrastructure in Quebec. The availability of infrastructure is one of the most important elements in commercializing fuel cell electric vehicles like the Mirai.

  • Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) named five Toyota/Lexus vehicles as best-in-class for fuel efficiency for the 2018 model year:
    • Toyota Prius c (compact car)
    • Toyota Prius (mid-size car)
    • Toyota Prius v (mid-size station wagon)
    • Toyota RAV4 Hybrid AWD (small SUV)
    • Lexus RX 450h AWD (standard SUV)

  • For several years, Toyota sites have hosted household waste collection events for team members and surrounding communities. These sites have invested close to $1 million to ensure more than 2 million pounds of material were either recycled or properly disposed.
    • Toyota Canada’s head office in Toronto held its 11th annual event in June 2018 and collected 1,200 pounds of electronic waste and 700 pounds of donations.

  • The Woodstock Wetland Trail, located on the north side of the assembly plant in Woodstock, Ontario runs along 200 acres of wetlands and woods, and allows Toyota team members and the public to experience nature first hand. The trail was a gift from Toyota to the local community to mark the 30th anniversary of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada.

  • In 2018, Toyota Canada associates participated in the World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) CN Tower Climb for Nature for the third consecutive year. The CN Tower Climb challenges participants to climb the 1,776 stairs of Canada’s tallest tower. Toyota Canada’s team of 31 raised $5,300 to support WWF’s conservation priorities.

  • Toyota Canada was the exclusive automotive sponsor of the University of Alberta EcoCar Team. The sponsorship supports the research and development of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles.
